Baby please don't go
Baby please don't go
Baby please don't go back to New Orleans
Because I love you so

Turn your lamp down low
Turn your lamp down low
Turn your lamp down low, my heart is beating so
So baby please don't go

Made me weep and moan
You made me weep and moan
You made me weep and moan, don't leave me all alone
Baby please don't go

You got me way down here
You got me way down here
You got me way down here, you didn't shed a tear
Oh baby please don't go

Baby please don't go
Baby please don't go
Baby please don't go

recording of 1961

Vee Jay No. 2201,

I don't want no woman, crazy 'bout a process head1
I don't want no woman, crazy 'bout a process head
She a process head, it's almost simple head

Ain't got no money, only got a hair-do fare
Ain't got no money, only got a hair-do fare
Ain't got a dime, enough to your hair did right

Been a fool one time, crazy over process head
Been a fool one time, crazy over process head
That no-good woman, almost drove me insane
Have mercy she begged

Lord, have mercy, on this processing fool
Lord, have mercy, on, on this processing fool
She won't have a process head, she's seen*
walking up and down the street
Have mercy, have mercy, with a processing fool

_________
* I'm not sure about the underlined part in the last verse
Hear the
soundclip, please mail me if you think you know the words

Note 1: process head, refers to the "marcel" hairstyle of deep waves made with a curling iron. It also refers to the "conk" style in which tightly curled hair is straightened using the chemical congolene (or should it be conkolene, according to Lionel Boyd) and then combed out. In the inner cities this is usually referred to as a comb and conk. African American men would usually have this done on a Thursday and then go to work on Friday wearing a bandana on their heads to keep their hair straight for the evening. the bandana is called a "do-rag". Thanks to Alan Wexler for this contribution.

Queen Bee

by John Lee Hooker / Bernard Besman
recording
from
Half a Stranger (Mainstream 903), copyright notice

Queen bee, queen bee, queen bee, queen bee, please come back to me
Queen bee, queen bee, queen bee yes, queen bee, please come back to me
'Cause you got the best darn stinger any queen bee I ever seen

Hmm, she stung me this mornin', yes, yes, yes, I been lookin' for all day long
She stung me this mornin', I've been lookin' for my queen bee a day long
Got me to the place one time, hate to see my queen bee leave home

Hmm, stinger long as my right arm
Every time she stings me, Lord, it makes my blood run warm

Redhouse

soundclip

by John Lee Hooker
recording
from ,
copyright notice

There's a redhouse1 over yonder, that's where my baby stays
Lord, there's a redhouse over yonder, Lord, that's where my baby stays
I ain't been home to see my baby in, ninety-nine and one half days

Wait a minute, something's wrong here, the key won't unlock this door
Wait a minute, something's wrong, Lord, have mercy, this key won't unlock this door
Something's goin' on here
I have a bad bad feeling that my baby, don't live here no more

Well, I might as well a go back over yonder, way back up on the hill,
That 's something to do
Lord, I might as well go back over yonder, way back yonder cross the hill
'Cause if my baby don't love me no more, I know her sister will

__________
Note 1: redhouse, a house of prostitution, a whorehouse. There would often be a red light lit over the front door to alert those who were looking for some action as a means of saying "Hey, here's where you get that stuff!" Though you will not likely find red lights burning outside a brothel today, historically speaking, areas of a city where there were concentrations of such places were known as "red-light districts". Thanks to Larry Haston from Tennessee, "a native U.S. Southerner and a blues freak", for this contribution to the list. Sounds to me like Larry knows what he's talkin' 'bout ;-).

(The) Waterfront

soundclip

by John Lee Hooker
recording of 1966
from
House Of The Blues (Vogue VG 651 500115), copyright notice

I cover the waterfront, watchin' the ship go by
I could see, everybody's baby, but I couldn't see mine
I could see, the ships pullin' in, to the harbor
I could see the people, meetin' their loved one
Shakin' hand, I sat there,
so all alone, coverin' the waterfront

And after a while, all the people,
left the harbor, and headed for their destination
All the ships, left the harbor,
and headed for their next destination
I sat there, coverin' the waterfront

And after a while, I looked down the ocean,
as far as I could see, in the fog, I saw a ship
It headed, this way, comin' out the foam
It must be my baby, comin' down
And after a while, the ship pulled into the harbor,
rollin' slow, so cripple
And my baby, stepped off board
I was still, coverin' the waterfront

Said "Johnny, our ship had trouble, with the fog
And that's why we're so late, so late
Comin' home, comin' down'

You done leave me when I need you, then I know you stand accused

Doing the man who loves you wrong
Breaking the heart you should be ruling
Doing the man who loves you wrong

Think twice before you go, baby this will be the end
Think twice before you go, baby this will be the end
You done leave me one time, baby, you'll leave again

(spoken:
Did you read about the flood?
It happened long time ago, in a little country town, way back in Mississippi
It rained and it rained, it rained both night and day
The people got worried, they began to cry,
"Lord have mercy, where can we go now?"
There were women and there was children, screaming and crying,
"Lord have mercy and a great disaster, who can we turn to now, but you?"
The great flood of Tupelo, Mississippi
It happened one evenin', one Friday evenin', a long time ago,
it rained and it started rainin'
The people of Tupelo, out on the farm gathering their harvest,
a dark cloud rolled, way back in Tupelo, Mississippi, hmm, hmm)

Wasn't that a mighty time,
wasn't that a mighty time?
Wasn't that a mighty time,
a mighty time, that evenin'?
It rained, both night and day
The poor people that had no place to go, hmm,hmm
A little town, called Tupelo, Mississippi
I never forget it and I know you won't either

Thinkin' about the woman I love, lovin' someone else

Boo-hoo, I just can't keep from cryin'

I'm worried about my baby, she's on my mind

Sometimes I wonder, do she think of me?
Sometimes I wonder, do she think of me?
And again I wonder, if I will ever be free

I'm tellin' all you women, what's on my mind
I'm tellin' all you women, what's on my mind
I never love one woman, no more at a time

Boo-hoo, I wring my hands and cry
Boo-hoo, I wring my hands and cry
I'm thinking about the lovin', that I let go by

Since you've been gone baby, I haven't been a bit of good
Since you've been gone baby, I haven't been a bit of good
Because I never get the loving, that I really should

I read your ad this morning you, said you want a real good man
I read your ad this morning you, said you want a real good man
Now I'm here with you baby, I want to know your plan

When I'll be goin' to work, I have to wear my uniform
When I'll be goin' to work, I have to wear my uniform
I got news for you baby, I keep the darn thing on

Well I can't hully gully1, I can't do a shimmy,
but when it comes to lovin', I'm a lovin' little fool
Come on daddy, love me all night long
I got news for you Johnny, win yourself a home

Well go to the bedroom, honey fix the bedroom up
Well go to the bedroom, Johnny fix the bedroom up
Got a whole lotta talkin', Johnny wanna talk to you, alright

__________
Note 1: believe that "hully gully" is a dance that was popular in the mid 1950's. Thanks to Jack King for this contribution to the list. Nic Tassi confirms this: Hully-gully is simply a dance which looks like the twist. I found that in a excellent french book "talkin' that talk" about jazz and blues slang. Thanks to Nic Tassi for this contribution;
On the other hand Bo says: Hully Gully is a nonsense word - the title of a song made up late 50's, 60's, name of the dance made up to accompany the song - was on Bandstand; kinda like Chubby Checker trying to repeat his "Twist" success with the "Hucklebuck" (which song was played continuously for 24 hours by WDRC in Hartford CT in an attempt to be in on the ground floor of this new[but failed] phenomenon). Kinda like Ram-A-Lam-a-Ding-Dong, Shimmy-Shimmy-CoCo-Bop, etc. Thanks to Bo for this contribution.

You Don't Move Me Baby

copyright notice

You know you don' move me babe,
You know you just don' move me no more
You know you just don' move me little girl
You know you just don' move me no more
I used to love you so hard, so hard, baby,
you almos' drove me out of my mind

I finally found a new love, a new love, do all the things that you didn't do
I found a brand new love, a brand new love, to do all the things that you didn't do
And that's why, that's why, purrty1 baby, you just don't love little Johnny no more
Hmm, hmm, hmm
Oh yeah, baby, babe, your cryin' just won't help no more,
let your tears fall down, fall down baby
It just don't worry me to see you cry
I tried to love you baby, but you would not treat me right,
I did ever'thing for you baby, you run around both night and day

I tried to talk to you baby, but you wouldn't pay me no mind
Until I just couldn't sleep at night, you had me dreamin' all kinds of bad dreams, baby
I was so worried about you baby, I was about to go outta my mind
I finally found someone babe, to ease my misery
You don't move me no more babe
You don't move me no more babe

Note 1: purrty, according to the Webster dictionary, a low vibratory murmur typical of an apparently contented or pleased cat. Southern Louisiana's John "JohnnyB" Bradford says: according to the Southern vernacular, is just another way to say pretty. Thanks to John "JohnnyB" Bradford for this contribution

You're So Nice And Kind To Me Lou Della

by John Lee Hooker
recording of November 1962
from John Lee Hooker: Boogie Chillun (),
copyright notice

People I had a woman, she was nice and kind to me in ev'ry way
People I had a woman, she was nice and kind to me in ev'ry way
But Lord, she died and she left me, I sang the blues on ev'ry Decoration Day1

Lord, I hate to see, I hate to see my baby go
People I hate to see my baby leave that mornin',
and my Lord takin' my baby 'way
She said, "Johnny Lee, don't you worry,
bring flowers on every Decoration Day"

I was 'round my baby's bedside, when my Lord takin' my baby, 'way
Lord, I was 'round my baby's bedside, when my Lord takin' my baby, 'way
It hurt me so bad, so bad, until I, just broke right down and cried
Hmm, hmm

She says, "Fare you well, I see you on every Decoration Day", I tol' them
I told my baby, I told my baby, "I bring flowers on every Decoration Day"
I bring you some flowers, babe, just to decorate your grave

People, y'all havin' a good time now, just like the flowers that comes in May
Y'all havin' a good time now, just like the flower that come in May
I think about Lou Della, Lou Della, Lou Della on every Decoration Day

Lou Della, Lou Della, Lou Della stays on my mind
Lou Della, Lou Della, people, boy
Lou Della stays on my mind
Lord, she died and she left me on one Decoration Day
Lord, Lou Della's gone and Lou Della's worryin' me

__________
Note 1: decoration day, from the custom of decorating graves on this day. The last Monday in May observed as a legal holiday in most states of the U.S. in remembrance of war dead.
