Typically, we think of the Mississippi Delta as being
at the mouth of the Mississippi River down near New Orleans,
Louisiana. But it is not!
Rather, it is in the Northwestern section of the state of
Mississippi and runs from Memphis to Vicksburgh. To the
East, the Mississippi Hill Country, to the West, the
levees
which contain the Mississippi River. A large alluvial flood
plain, many millenia of floods have deposited rich topsoil,
making the land some of the most fertile on earth and making
it a center for cotton production in the American
South.
